A solar charger collects energy from your solar panels and stores it in your battery system. Victron’s SmartSolar range uses advanced MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) technology to maximise energy capture, achieving full battery charge quickly and efficiently. This intelligent charging process helps maintain long-term battery health. Unlike basic PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controllers, which directly connect solar arrays to batteries and reduce array voltage, MPPT controllers adjust input voltage for optimal power transfer—even when panel and battery voltages differ.
MPPT controllers outperform PWM units in cooler or low-light conditions, continuing to deliver charge when PWM may fall short. They feature built-in DC-to-DC voltage converters, ensuring minimal power loss during voltage conversion. As solar array size increases, MPPT technology allows for higher voltage configurations, thinner cabling, and longer cable runs. This makes MPPT controllers the preferred solution for systems over a few hundred watts, particularly in more demanding or complex solar setups.
