A solar charge controller manages the energy flow from solar panels to batteries. Victron’s SmartSolar charger uses advanced MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) technology to optimise energy harvest, ensuring batteries reach full charge faster while maintaining long-term battery health. Unlike simpler PWM controllers that reduce panel voltage to match the battery, MPPT controllers adjust their input to capture maximum power and convert it efficiently to suit the battery’s requirements.

MPPT controllers are particularly effective in cooler or less sunny conditions, continuing to deliver power even when panel performance drops. They also allow for higher-voltage panel setups with lower current, reducing cable size and energy loss over distance. For systems with larger arrays, MPPT offers better performance and flexibility, making it the preferred choice for efficient solar charging.
